Can you remember Mukul?After watching Sonar Kella in childhood days ,I was determined to visit Sonar kella in my life. Original name is Jaisalmir Fort.The best time to visit this fort is in winter. It will be better to plan as per calendar if you are really interested to visit this place. Jailsalmir Desert festival is organised by Rajasthan State tourism corporation every year at the beginning of new year.This festival continues for three days.

The festival starts with a grandeur Rally where every participants are dressed with Royal Rajasthani attire.The main attraction of this festival is Camels. This ship of deserts are decorated with colourful dress. Camel Caravan is the main attraction of this festival.

The rally ends at the Festival arena. Several innovative competitions starts with the presence of all the participants including local people and foreigners. The programme starts keeping the Golden Fort as backdrop.The fort was built in 12th century with the sand stone which is still an wonder of the world. You will also utter ‘Sonar Kella” like Mukul when the first ray of sun creates golden effect on yellow stones.

By this time the competitors are ready for several competitions. The turban competition, Moustache competitions ,Mr.Mahendra Miss Mumal contest are some examples. Camel Polo and Tug of war between local folks and Foreign tourists are the main attraction of this festival. You can experience this colourful competitions at day time and typical Rajasthani Folk song and Folk dance at night. Local handicraft are the best choice to collect as souvenir of this desert city. This is really a rare experience for every tourists to feel the history and the folk culture of Rajasthan which are mingled with each other.

Usually Festival packages in this desert city is high in comparison to other cities. Hence, it is advisable to book your lodging well in advance .You can also visit Jaisalmir with single day planning keeping Jodhpur as center.

The airport is available at Jodhpur. You have to take car from Jodhpur to Jaisalmir if you prefer to come by Air.
There is a weekly train directly from Howrah to Jaisalmir. Jodhpur is also well connected with all the major cities.

There are many iconic spots to visit within the city but one and only wonder of this desert city is SONAR KELLA.
